    Hi Everyone,

I run a freelance writing business and also do Affiliate marketing using paid and non-paid promotional methods.

I have registered my business as a sole trader, but are there any other forms/things I need to sign up to - what about the data protection tax?

Please note my turnover is far below the VAT threshold.

    Many thanks,

    Sam

    Hi Sam

If your profit will be below £5,315 you could apply for Small Earnings Exemption from Class 2 NI and the form is at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cf10.pdf .

There is no data protection "tax", but there is an annual registration fee and to see if you need to register go to Data Protection and Freedom of Information Advice for Organisations - ICO .

HMRC have a guide as to what records you must keep and for how long at HM Revenue & Customs: Record keeping (self-employed) .

    Good luck with the business.

    Regards

    Keith

I was just going to say that National Insurance Contributions are another thing you may have to register for (and pay!!)

    Thanks guys,

Lets be honest the "annual data protection registration fee" is nothing more than a tax!

Am in the process of registering but the websites taking me round in circles!

    Thanks,

    Sam
