    Hi,

Still trying desperately to get my head around the business side of my business

What I need to know is when recording my income for self assesment or for my records, should I be only using the 'confirmed' figure in Affiliate Window's admin screen (for example)?? As this is the 100% commision waiting to go into my bank account, or should I only record what and when it actually gets payed into my bank?

    Cheers,
    Steve

Confirmed only refers to the sale has been confirmed by the merchant (either manually or by default).

**Importantly** the merchant could still go bump and not pay
Only use the amount you get paid into your account.

Many of us have been stung in the past by assuming we will actually get paid confirmed commissions - that's not the case...

    ...never got paid.

Ah this makes sense, so until my account reaches it's payout threshold and it's been paid into my bank acc then I won't state this.

when aw pay you they create a self-billing invoice. This is what you need to keep and record the figure on there.
The date of the invoice is the date you officially earned the money.

Do most networks send this to you via email then after they have paid you??

Usually there is a link to download your invoices in the account section. Some are better than others but generally that's how it works. Amazon don't give you an invoice because they are exempt from all normal rules
Just bear in mind that an invoice means the money has been earned and is owed - not necessarily paid. Not such a big problem in affiliate marketing but something to be aware of nonetheless.

The self billing invoices are raised by the network ONLY when they're ready to pay you those specific commissions - so they've received payment and they've released the commissions for payments. If it's raised, you will have a matching payment in your bank account/paypal account/cheque in post within a few days.

I was on about business in general rather than affiliate marketing. The distinction is worth noting - say he sells advertising to a third party and raises an invoice each month. It's unlikely he'll be paid straight away but still needs to record it on the day the invoice was raised.

Of course - but the original question was which revenue figure to use for tax purposes and that's the self billing invoices. And these will always be paid, upon raising.

    Hi

For completing your year end accounts, download the excel analysis of each invoice paid in the 2-3 months following your year end and use the commissions that had transaction dates prior to your year end. Depending upon the merchant, it is likely that all valid commissions earned at your year end would be paid within 2-3 months.

    Regards

    Keith
