I love the blog item called "Why buying shared leads is a good idea"!

Leadpoint U.S. gets away with selling each lead around 4 times - is it better for the merchants? - Nope, they have a 1 in 4 chance of converting them at best.

Is it better for the affiliates? - No, they get paid much less as the leads convert so poorly.

Why is buying shared leads a good idea? Because Leadpoint can make more money that way. From every other point of view it's a nonsense.

Hi Michael,

Glad you had a good read of the blog, is there any chance I can ask you to post your comment on the actual blog Itself?

In reply to your points, the reason we have a shared bidding model in the US is because after a trial, affiliates found they received a better pay out compared to selling on an exclusive basis. Buyers -although they had to work harder - find that a shared model increases their ROI and consumers know to expect more than one call and so could make sure that the deal they were being offered was actually the best for them. As Michael is aware I am sure, nobody selling a lead can guarantee that a consumer won’t fill in another form on another website so in reality consumers may already be receiving multiple calls.

In a shared bidding model, Affiliates actually get paid more because their lead is sold up to four times, not once as your post seems to suggest. From analysing our own data on the 3 million leads plus we have traded since 2004 suggests that on average a given lead is sold more than 3 times.

As the market leader in the US, we now trade more than a million leads each year. The shared lead model very clearly works well for affiliates across the pond. To suggest its nonsense is just simply wrong. The idea of the blog is to cover some of the main issues from all sides of the lead generation industry and spark a constructive debate amongst all stakeholders in the industry. LeadPoint UK - as you well know - works on an exclusive lead model and will do so for the time being. However, we want to challenge the status quo so that the industry will evolve to the benefit of both buyers and sellers. To accept things as they are and not question current practices will lead to stagnation which is not in the interests of lead buyers or sellers.

Michael, I am sure that you would agree with me that scrutinising every part of the lead generation industry and striving to improve things where possible will benefit all of us?

I hope this answers your points and we welcome all constructive debate about all aspects of the industry on our blog at Lead Generation in the UK. I would also welcome any guest posts or suggested topics from A4U members.

Alain
