Personally, if it was my first PPC campaign I would lower the budget, start with a couple of hundred and then re evaluate later.
Adwords is a funny beast, only half of it can be learnt, from tutorials and articles etc. The other half is largely intutition, and something that works well for one market doesn't work at all for another. As a result, you need to use adwords for a while before you start to understand how to get the best out of it, such as the minimum amount to spend to place you above your competitors, how to get the best conversions etc.
As an example, the google docs and other articles tell you that the CTR (Click through rate) is really important, and the better the CTR the better the results. However, ad's with a high CTR can be like pouring money down the drain, and the ad is attracting a lot of browsers, rather than buyers. An ad thats more targetted can give a much lower CTR, but actually attracts more sales.
Its things like this you can only learn through experience. It can be a steep learning curve, with the potential for you to lose a lot of money! I would advise starting small and as your results improve, then you can start pumping more money into it.
