I had it happen to a golf I had when I was younger.
I had just finished putting a new head on the engine, I brushed the oil off my hands and placed the dirty rag on the side of the engine bay. A gust of wind took the rag before my eyes and it went straight into the cambelt (as I hadn't put the cover back on) - bum
Gutted - back to the scrapyard I went.
Lucky I have a rover 1.8 engine this time and that can snap the belt without touching the valvesperfect.
