I have been thinking of the taking the plunge for a while now and the more researching I do the more quetions I have.

Niche Markets-
There is a couple of niche markets that I am interested in. The problem I am having is that as they are 'niche' I cant find Networks that promote the relevent merchants. Most merchants appear to promote the usual travel/leisure/shopping markets. Is there any easy way of finding out which networks promote relevent merchants?

I also have a couple of particular companies-large organisatons- that I would wish to promote, but they dont appear to be attached to any networks or even have an afiliate scheme. Am I best to contact them?

Also when I am trying to find a merchant that does a particular product I sign up to easy content units and do a search for that item and it will list all the merchants that sell it and what network they are on.

Yes, ask here which networks feature the merchants you are looking for.

Yes, they may have a way of working with you that isn't advertised. there are a few companies who do this.
