Following from my previous thread
if you're taking a simiar strategy to the one i have taken, you should be writing LOTS of content for a few niched sites. whilst time consuming it will ensure that your site ranks organically and provides lots of useful resource for your users, this helps develop authority and ensures that they remain loyal to your site.
the below strategy should help your site rank for various long tail keyphrases and help you 1. build content on your site, 2. help your site rank for these long tail phrases 3. help you to position the products and merchants you are promoting to that niche.
you need - https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/KeywordToolExternal
first type in a generic keyword
get a CSV of the resulting list.
next
for each word do another keyword search using the goggle tool, focus on any phrases
get the CSV of the results and repeat one last time.
you should now have a massive list. after you've filtered out the unusable ones(you do this by using a little logic to see which you can write about) you should now have a list of words and phrases.
uses these as individual blog posts and ta-da lots of keyword related content that hits specific niches.
heres a working example
my domain - exercise bands
I pull a list that includes:
exercise tubing
workout band
exercise tubes
reebok resistance tubes
resistance tube exercises
resistance band training
exercise tubing
workout band
exercise tubes
reebok resistance tubes
resistance tube exercises
resistance band training
band tricep
gym band
tube band
band workouts
band weights
band squats
resistance tubing
exercise elastics
exercise mats
exercise bike
resistance bands workout
exercise instructions
amongst others
next i uses these as blog titles and blog about each one relative to my topic (exercise bands), making sure the keyphrase and my sites keywords are present through out the article.
eg>exercise mats
creates an article as follows -
how to use exercise bands with exercise mats
which exercise mat to use with exercise bands
then you can start going into detail about the pros and cons, how its affects the perfromance of an exercise band or a work out and so on.
great for when you get a little writers block

Sounds like a good approach.
I've neglected writing content for my sties as they are ranking ok for now but should get on the case before they start to disappear!
I could suggest to follow news, check out video sites etc, there's also plenty of content you can use, reuse, or inspire; article directories/blogs again another source for something to get ideas from;

A really good place for content ideas is Yahoo Answers. Often you just have to rewrite a question, and post it on your site. You are also likely to outrank yahoo (if your site has related content), when a customers searches for that particular question.

Don't all these posts obscure the affiliate links/product reviews from the user?
On my blogs I do each product as a review so if my site is yellow widgets each post will be:
Sony 32" yellow widget: info on the product price comparison/link to merchant
Panasonic 32" yellow widget: info on the product with price comparison/link to merchant
If I start throwing up posts based around keywords there user isnt going to easily find my product review posts.
How do you deal with this?
Nice post above, always good to see working examples.
One thing I often do is to create good shopping navigation all around articles so that people can see links into a shop-like environment.
I also use really strong calls to action within articles such as the odd linked product image, nice shiny "more info" or "shop now" buttons and prominent, good looking text links inviting users to check out a whole load of related products.
Works very well for me and means my content efforts are well monetised. My sites don't have a very high bounce rate at all.

Another example:
Bird Baths
All the content pages link to the product page with relevant anchor text. This means that the product page will rank higher in the search engines when people are searching for bird boxes to buy.

Another technique I find useful is to monitor forum posts in the niche you operate in an to summarise the threads of hot topics.
Don't think of them as posts think of them as pages.Don't all these posts obscure the affiliate links
So to use a real life example for you, on your sleeping bags site, you need pages of advice:
What different sleeping bags are made from
Different tog ratings explained or whatever they are
how to care for your sleeping bag - airing after use, washing etc.
These add content to your site - google then starts to see you as slightly more of an authority on the subject of sleeping bags! If you build them as pages rather than posts they do then develop page ranking which then as others have said you can link to your other pages from. It gives you much more opportunity to optimise title tags and get your key phrases into the content - title tags, meta descriptions, h1 tags etc etc etc.
It then gives google more reasons to serve your site up when someone is searching for sleeping bags.
