So how do you pick a niche? Or how do you pick one variant or spelling over another?

There are lots of people making money telling people how to find niches,(mmm niche idea comparison site) - snake oil! I think that jonsp has hit the nail on the head, spotted the elephant in the room, a niche is no good at all unless you can add value. Now that can either be through offering discount vouchers, price comparison, good reviews or product descriptions or something really novel.

A niche in my book is doing something better than the big boys - ie specialise. For example car insurance would be difficult to rank for but ranking for Morris Marina insurance would be easier but not as popular and perhaps not that profitable. Finding a niche is very, very easy, finding a niche which is popular and profitable is a lot harder, although not impossible. GKW tool doesn't help you with this and is, in my opinion useless, and time wasting and can't even come close to your own brain in assessing what may be a popular untapped niche.

I suppose what I have learned about niches is that you need to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince. So I am puckering up and stock piling tons of lip balm ready for the long haul!

    Some food for thought there.

I guess you just gotta keep plugging away and if you throw enough mud at the wall there won't be smoke without fire.

    Hi guys,
Got to admit i think the Google keyword tool has got less useful / reliable. A brand new products keywords will display as not enough data available for the few months its out when its getting most searches! This is not helpful. I did my first PPC practice campaign a couple months back on certain electronic product. After referring to GKWT to find something that got searched i setup the landing page and found i made £150 (£50 profit), easy i thought! Setup a load more landing pages on same products from different companies but no luck in making money, so i narrowed down and matched the spec from different companies to the profit making product still no luck.

My point is this..ive learnt that 1, dont rely on GKWT, do searches for reviews of products and find the ones that get rave reviews and have well known brand names. These are the products people are searching for no matter what GKWT says. Secondly even if you do get these products im struggling with finding out why the exact same spec product, for the same price, on the same style landing page but from a different company doesnt convert.

    MG.
