In order to upload my Wordpress files to my hosting account, I believe I first need to acquire an FTP client. Is this correct? I have looked at some on line, but am a bit overwhelmed by the options available. Can anyone recomend one that is free and straightforward to use for a beginner? My hosting service (Dream Hosting) recomends WS-FTP LE 32 from ipswitch, but there is a charge for this.

I'd be very grateful for any help anyone can offer...

    No problem...

FileZilla is just what you need.

Hope that helps and best of luck.

I use Filezilla on my main PC, and FireFTP on my laptop. Both are very good, especially the editing modes of Filezilla which save loads of constant uploading of the same file when you are testing 'live'.

Hmmmm will have to look at filezilla, I do love FireFTP but one thing lacking - unless im not looking in the right place - is the ability to chmod.

Before I make the leap, can someone confirm if this is poss in filezilla?

Yep, very easy to chmod using FlieZilla.

Off the top of my head you right click the file/folder you want to change and there's an option there to change the 'File Permissions'.

Just in case anyone is a MAC user, the best FTP I've found so far is YummFTP. Mutiple accounts etc, good user instructions and also a helpful resource team. There is a 30 day trial to be found somewhere but it's under 30 dollars to purchase if want the full version (which I have). But, yep if I go back to my PC if it still turns on)I have used Filezilla before and found it to be great :-). Get a feel for a few if you like if there are free versions available.
