    Hey all,

I've just bought a domain with a 123reg, and hosting with a seperate hosting company, but here is the problem...

How do i get the domain to work with my hosting!!?

I've changed the name servers to the ones I received from the hosting to - ns1.name.com ns2. etc, and also added the IPs I received for the DNS from the hosting, the IP addresses were after the NS1 so ns1.name.com: 123.456.78.9

    Is this right?!

:/ or have i messed it up

Previously i bought the domains from the same place as my hosting but figured it would be cheaper elsewhere!

    Does anyone know te process?

Many thanks if you can help!
    Alex

mmm you want someone more technical than me maybe but on my other domains you put the n21.blah.whatever and no numbers ... although thats ukreg and Its been a while since I bought domains..

You also have to tell your hosting you're using the domain - so you'll have to add it somewhere ...

You have three options, either do the sensible thing and ask your registrar/hosting company for advice because they'll be able to help you...

The other thing is, double check that the nameservers are entered correctly, you could also simply try going to http://IP-ADDRESS and see if you get to your hosting providers server Apache page. If not, you've got the wrong IP Address.

Finally, another option is delete the IP address and just use the nameservers by themselves.

Oh and while I think about it, your post is quite new, so how long has it been since you set this up since it can take a few hours to propagate the nameservers so you'll have to be patient.

On 123reg you should only enter the nameservers, not the IP address. You should go back and edit it to the correct values in the 123reg control panel, then email your host to ask them to point the domain at your server.

If it's a .co.uk the change normally occurs in a few hours.
TLDs (.com, .net etc) can take a bit longer.

I buy from 123 and host on CSnewmedia

Change name servers in 123 control panel to point to the nameservers these will be provided in the hosting provider (CSNewmedia in my case).

Next after the domain is set up on the hosting platform edit the dns settings to see the A record see the ip address for the domain - then I copy this and paste it in to the
123 control panel changing the ipadress to the hosted ip adress.

Then after 5 mins I ping the domain name the name resolves to the new ip adress from the hosting provider.

    Hello Alex,

Normally site propogation after DNS changes takes couple of hours for global updates.

Once you make the changes you will have to wait for some time ..this time at times can vary for 24 hours as well.

We use Enom ..normally our clients DNS updated takes 5 to 20 minutes for update.

It normally depends from registrar to registrar as well.

    Hi,

I'm stumped on this one -

I have setup an email filter in cpanel for a user called admin where:

( emails to info@mydomain.com are forwarded to admin@mydomain.com)

    Rules
    To Equals info@mydomain.com

    Actions
    Deliver to folder ./To Info

    and of course, activated it.

Now, what I would expect would be, that any email sent to info@mydomain.com would be moved to the Inbox/To Info folder - but nothing happens, emails to info@mydomain.com go to the Inbox.

I added a quick subject equals to check the mechanism - and if i filter on email subject instead of To field, that is ok, the emails get filtered into the Inbox/To Info

Now, the info@mydomain.com emails are all forwarded anyway, to admin@mydomain.com, but the To field still shows up as To: info@mydomain.com, so I thought this would not be a problem.

Can anyone tell me the gotcha that I have stumbled into - I have of course used the 'test filter' button, and that works.
