As far as I understand it your index/home page should have a fair amount of written content on it about the keywords you are targeting. So for example if my keyword I was going after were red widgets then on my index/home page I should have some written content about red widgets.

But if I am using Wordpress how does Google know which post is my index page?

Surely it changes with each new post unless you have a post set as sticky?

So what I am asking is where should the best content go on a Wordpress site?

    Thanks.

It goes to the index (index.html, index.htm, index.php) page and that is always your home page. Post your site if you want some advice.

Using you comedy box sets site as an example, Google would see the home page as being those 3 posts that are currently displayed on it.

Besides making one post sticky you can also choose to display a static page as your home page - which would be ideal if you wanted to create a site that was less like a blog and more like (for example) an ecommerce type site. That static page could include some general info about the topic of the site and links to some of the more important pages/posts.

Do you think using a sticky post with your main content on or displaying a static page would be more user friendly than just displaying the latest posts? Assuming the latest posts might not be as 'optimised' as the static page or sticky post.

Ideally your index page should be continually refreshing with posts related to red widgets. The more posts you have appearing on that page for red widgets the more relevant the page will become for that term.

I (personally, in my experience) disagree with this.

I think it is best to have a static homepage, optimised for the keywords you are targetting with some compelling copy as to what you site does and why the visitors should look around your site.

You can then have an article, news or blog section which you can then update with new info.

While it is great to have new, relevant copy added on a regular, it is not necessary to add it to the homepage.
