Starting your own affiliate program

Hi all,

I'm a photographer looking to create my own simple affiliate program to promote and sell my limited edition prints.

To begin with I will be inviting potential publishers to sign up as affiliates personally, so I just need a system that gives them a unique id and creates affiliate links for them to promote my prints, then tracks any sales they make and keeps a record of the commissions they earn.

I've looked at using click2sell.eu as they seem to provide most of what I need, but I'm unhappy with the fact that the link they give me to sign-up potential affiliates goes to a generic account creation page, after which the affiliate then has to search their marketplace to find my product to promote and get their unique link. That's no good to me.

Whilst I understand that if you use a third party website to create an affiliate program then all parties need to be signed up to that website, I want the affiliate sign up process to culminate in them being immediately given a unique link to promote my product, because I was the one who sent them there.

Can anyone tell me a solution or company that will allow me to achieve this? I have virtually no budget, so CJ and any other companies that demand big set-up fees are a no-go. I'd ideally like to use a company that makes their money my taking a small commission from each sale made.

Do you want to setup an in-house affiliate program or join a popular network such as CJ / shareasale or both?

Both have merits and demerits.

Joining an affiliate network is just like renting a temporary shop at a trade-show. They have a database of affiliates. You will be immediately with contacts with many affiliates. They will inform their affiliates about your program. The more you pay them more they will promote for you.

But the affiliates are never yours. If you leave the network, youwill leave their contacts and it is for ever. Another negetive point is the links. You will never get the SEO benefits of the affiliate links. Because the links will come to your sites via network site.

For in-house program, you will have your own system, and own your affiliates. You can know their emails and use them for another affiliate program of yours. If you use advanced affiliate software, that will give you SEO friendly way of linking. If you have many domains in future, a multidomain affiliate software may help you to create an inhouse network with your own domains. BUT .... to get the first set of affiliates, you have to struggle.
