Hi there - I'm really new to affiliate marketing and website building. I got into it really because I love researching new things and writing about them. I also really need to make some money but can only do so from home at the moment! I've just read a book by George Marshall which was really inspirational and shed light on a lot of the things that were really confusing me. However, having never built a Website before I'm still really confused by disk space, monthly data transfer etc. How do I know how many GB's a website will use? I've just signed up for Web hosting with TsoHost and opted for their Pro Linux account using the special offer code that I found on another thread. I also opted to have hosting for another 5 domains. The amount of disk space didn't change so what happens if I use all my disk space on 6 domains - does that mean that I won't be able to use the add-on 5 domains? Hope all this makes sense! If anybody can give me any information or suggest good books I can read which will help I would be really grateful.

Firstly Ladystokesy, welcome to the forum

Your disk space usage depends on the type of scripts you use.

Every newbie tends to go either with wordpress or a plain HTML website built from scratch. Given that the Pro space plan has 10 GB of space, I honestly doubt you're going to be exceeding that in the short run, unless you're going to host big video files ( like movies) and other similar stuff on your server.

Disk space is the space you need to store all the files for your site, the 10GB offered by your host should be more than enough to get started.

Data transfer is the use your websites get, so email, transferring files, user hits etc. The 150GB you have on your plan should also be more than enough to get started with.

You could always upgrade at a later date but for your average sites these limits should be more than enough.

I run a mixture of around 20 sites and don't use anything near the limits you have on your plan.

Like peonau states it will depend on the type of sites you are looking to run.

Let me give a concrete idea with a ready word press blog site

See the blog site at altoonative travel . It contain 914 files. Including scripts, images etc. Total size of the files is only 11MB. There is a backend database behind it. If you have say 100 pages you will have approx another 1-2 MB. So currently the site data is only 13 MB.

For initial stats (with say 200 monthly visitors ) and backup you can add 200% more though it is on higher side. Approx 50 MB is sufficient unless you pload big images or vids. say you add more some more images, 1-2 youtube vids then say another 50 MB. So 100 MB for each site. Normally.

If you keep on adding 100 vids of 100 MB each then for a single site 10 GB is not enough.

If you run emails in your site, then email data will be stored in the same place in most hosts. If you don’t keep emails stored in the server you will need hardly additional space. If you would like to have too many emails with too many spam messages then you may need space accordingly.

10 GB space, to run 6 normal sites is more than enough unless you have too many visitors and they have uploaded or you have uploaded to many files.

Hope above will give you concrete idea.

    Thanks

Thanks everyone this makes a lot more sense to me now. At this moment in time I'm not planning to upload videos on any of the Sites I build - just use images and text, so I should be fine by the sounds of it!
