Hi sockul, I'm a newbie here so I'm just sharing my views - perhaps other members might disagree with me!
We launched our first affiliate site earlier this year and we spent ages (probably too long) thinking about a domain. We looked for terms that had a high search volume for the industry, in the hope we might get lucky enough for an exact match domain being available but no such luck.
In the end we went for something close to exact match that suited our brand concept. Perhaps others might share their story?
In terms of trademarking and urls - any marketing person worth their salary will buy all urls associated with a trademark, or they are really asking for a headache. I used to work for a brand that only owned the .com version of their name as a domain, and the fights they had to go through to obtain the .co.uk and the .de etc was unbelievable. As far as I know, they still don't own them.
Even more incredibly, these 'squatters' were actually affiliates as there was no clause in the terms and conditions that stopped this. (Good on the affiliates I say!)
So to cut to the chase, if it's there, I'd grab it. Perhaps read through the T&C's of your targeted brands before you commit though.
Talk to you later,
Iain
