Hi folks. I've had a few forays into affiliate marketing, probably similar to most, thinking I was going to get rich in 6 months the way were told so by the people selling pyramid schemes.
Anywhoo, my first two projects I gave up on, but I've recently bought a dog blog that's the best chance I've had of bringing in my first affiliate paycheck.
To experts or people out there, please take a look at my latest blog post, and if there's any tips or hints as to anything I'm doing wrong, would you be kind enough to tell me?
In return, I work in SEO and am willing to help anyone out with any questions they may have.
    Cheers.

We love dogs as well but when it comes to ROI for time and money spent, you may want to consider building traffic that will pay better returns in the long run for your efforts. Eg. write articles on pet insurance as opposed to the dog harnesses you are currently blogging about etc. "Go where the big bucks are" is the best pointer I think.

So if you are promoting skin care, for example, try and promote Creme de La Mer (retail price £500+) not the cheap generic stuff you can buy at the local pharmacy for less than £5. What this comes down to is building traffic for the so-called "money terms". The ability to do that is what separates the men from the boys (or girls) in aff marketing. Hope this helps.

    Ditch the dog blog IMO

Pet industry is quiet competitive in SEO, because a lot of people do it as a small business or hobby. Then take into account pet commission for affiliates is very low.

You will also find unless people are looking for a specific product those terms just wont convert.

Thanks for the reply. I have written a post about dog insurance, but I'm just testing out with the key phrase 'harnesses for small dogs'.

The next plan is to write a blog post about sponsoring guide dogs, and the merchant pays £20 per direct debit sign up - I think this is a good rate.

Understood that it's a fairly low commission market sector, and I do aim to find more profitable ones, but I'm just testing the water.

The way I see it, as soon as I've made any kind of money that's a massive step. For the moment, I'm going to stay on this subject, and once I've started making a little money, that's when I'm going to branch out.

Given that dogs is international might be worth looking on Clickbank for some dog training ebooks - commissions are obviously much higher. If you put forward a decent pitch, eg my dog barks too much -> this ebook is the solution "some" Americans will fall for it.

Probably not a good idea to promote UK specific offers on your blog when the bulk of your traffic is likely to be from the USA.

Thanks for your advice. I'm not a big fan of Clickbank because the landing pages are awful, but I suppose I have to know my industry.

How come the bulk of traffic is supposed to come from US? Most of it so far has been from Britain.

Random addition to this thread, but the conversation at Friday's after work drinks turned to Dog Helmets and Trailers that are attached for bikes (as one of the dog owners in the office wanted to cycle to work but had to transport the dog to work also!).

Needless to say there's not loads of good websites but there were certainly pictures of dog helmets and dog trailers which we found quite entertaining, and might get you a few extra links too..

    Just a thought!

We sell some dog training stuff - Popular Training Products - Thought it may be of interest. Let me know if you want any information on any of them or even any copy writing.

Pet training is actually not a bad niche. If done well it could be fairly profitable.

This anti barking collar is £82.36 and we pay 6% commission. Aboistop Anti Barking Collar Kit - - Might not be a bad place to start.

Lol dunno whether it was an intended pun but the "Any Pointers?" for a dog site made be laugh...

Maybe you could whippet into shape!

On second thoughts you might be barking up the wrong tree.

I've just purchased a couple of dog domain's too. Certainly a good niche to be in I think, my exact search terms had low competition and a decent number of searches based on Google's keyword tool. More specific the better as long as there are enough people searching those terms.
