Depends what your site is offering really. If you're targeting keywords like "cheapest tea caddy" then a price comparison could be an option, but if you're providing information, then adsense may be the best way forward.
Something that I'm coming around to (on the subject I work in) is that Adsense performs way better than Affiliate links.
I was thinking in the shower this morning that if I were to sell diet sign-ups earning £20 per sale, based on a 1% convertion rate, I would need 100 clicks to make £20. 100 clicks on adsense at 25-30 pence per click works out better, plus as I'm not managing links and products, I have the time to build new value adding content which will in turn bring in more traffic and clicks.
I'm sure others will disagree based on their experience and niche, but I would advise taking a serious look at adsense, and at least test it out. on my main site I use a combination of Adsense and Amazon as well as a few other affiliate links to other merchants, and Adsense blows everything else out of the water.
One final thing on the Asense thing. It can be a really useful tool for finding other markets that your visitors are interested in. By using the ad blocking features, you can see which ad categories are being clicked most, which can provide you with some surprising insights into what your visitors are interested in
