Oh, sorry, I did not want to disappoint you, just to encourage you by letting you know that you are doing better than others. Thanks for the tip, I do have Amazon products on my site, but the site needs to be re-indexed, I think. However, my main products do not come from Amazon, unfortunately. Keep going!
Yep people should look up Affi's posts and articles, his info and advice helped me get over 100% roi on PPC campains on the run upto Xmas and still does now. Plus it's always a fun read!:tup

I've not managed to read all the posts in this thread - there are far too many - but I did follow it initially. So sorry if this has already been asked.
What I'd like to know is how many of the sites people have created (it's getting on for 3 months since the thread was started) have gone on to rank at number 1 and started to earn worthwhile money?
Looking back at the first few domains, none of the ones I checked actually ranked anywhere near the top so I'm wondering how achievable it is.
Are people finding that it's not easy to get ranked number one (or even near the top) for their chosen search phrase? Or does it just take longer for Google to rank you?
I didnt manage to get any of the domains posted here but have used the theory to set up about 15 of these type of sites so far.
I have one site that is number 3 for a search a few more on page one and the rest somewhere beyond that. Most of the sites that are on page one are getting around 10 - 20 unique hits a day from search engines.
Here is some info on one my sites. This is for a site that is on the bottom half of page one of a 4,400 searched a month niche/keyword. It went live around Feb 12 2009 and has had 270 hits in that time.
The stats are:
Clicks to Merchant: 155
Orders: 2
Conversion rate: 0.65%
Earnings: £5.25
So as you can it hasnt even earnt enough to cover the domain name yet let alone the man hours.
I will be posting my monthly stats for March 2009 sometime this week which will cover all of my sites.
Thanks Seamaster - that's what I was suspecting from looking at lots of sites.
It could just be that more SEO is needed, getting more/better back links from established sites. But then doing that can become more work so I'm not so sure they're worth the time - at least not for creating many small sites.
Has anyone else had any success? And not just with one, as I'm sure that you can get one ranked no 1 with enough work and/or luck. But had success with a number of niche sites?
Think about it this way - if you have x number of sites you already have your own linking network, regardless of the scale. Two of my mini sites are in positions 3/4 for their exact match phrase and only have links coming in from my (related) sites. Search for 'make money grizzly' - he has a network of people that are happy to share links - BUT YOU HAVE TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK! :tup
I think its early days still and until someone is top of a large niche, say 30k searches, with products that sell for over £100 then we can't really say if this is a good approach for a newbie or not.
However, I'm not sure many people will be able to domainate a niche like that though! I certainly can't.
I think the real problem for newbies is working out what format of landing page converts best. You need to do lots of sites to test different things out on until you find the right one, then you can apply that to all your sites. Unless you are getting a lot of hits, say over 100 a day it is going to be hard to draw any conclusions in a short space of time.
I have a site that converts well and others that don't. They have different formats/layouts - is that why there is the difference in converstion or is that the niche is more convertable or is that the merchants I like to arent liked by the people who click on my sites? I think there are so many variables that it will take at least six motnhs of hard slog before you can start to see what works and what doesnt.
Format of Successful Niche Landing Sites?
It would be nice to see some of the more sucessful AM'ers post up some expamples of sites that convert well, even if its just s screen dump and they obscure the url etc
It's probably too early to come to conclusions on this. You may need a good 6 months to get a better indication of what works. Do keep up the good work!
