It doesn't unfortunately. If you broad match widgets you can find out that 50 people clicked your ad after searching for "buy pink widgets" - you can't find out that 100 people searched for "buy yellow widgets" but didn't click your ad. Of course if you only run exact match phrases you could get a good idea of real search volume just by looking at impressions.

Its taken me most of two whole days to read this thread in its entirety whilst trying to understand its salient points.

Wow, what an epic thread...it seems like a manual for budding AM'ers all of its self!

I will hopefully soon be launching my own site using a lot of the principles discussed here.
It would be nice to here from any of the original people who managed to secure a domain name offered by smingle to see how they have fared in their AM adventure.

So please drop me a PM or reply here to let us know how you've got on. It would be really interesting to get a handle on your experiences given the thread started over a year ago and in the process help a newb

I realise this game is not a get rich quick scheme and thats not why I'm trying my hand at it, just looking to create an alternative income stream due to the double whammy of the recession and a redundancy. So help motivate a noob who is who could do with some inspiration.

I didn't manage to get hold of a smingle domain as they went so fast but registered a few using the same ideas.

Some of them did ok and some of them didn't. From my experience I wouldn't worry too much about getting a good keyword domain if you can't find one.

Instead thing about making a bit of a bigger, more general site that will be easy to expand upon. Getting a 22k exact match keyword site to number one in Google only gets you about 5% of that number clicking through to your site each month so its not worth focussing on just one niche IMO.

If you were thinking of making a site about cordless hair dryers and wanted the domain cordlresshairdryers.co.uk I would instead get a domain like besthaircare.co.uk and then focus on cordlress hair dryers for the content then when it is at number one for that search term start adding content and backlinks for hair straighteners, clippers etc.

So in a nutshell: don't limit yourself by your domain name and think small to start with but make sure there is room for expansion.

I'm not sure how many were actually developed and how many were just parked.

I remember at the time seeing a lot of parked domains. Shame really.

Ah this thread was my first step into AM those few years ago. Didn't do much the 1st year but grew it after that to a decent steady monthly rate and im now able to head off travelling the world while continuing to work on it. Might re-read this for a trip down memory lane....

I got some success too but nothing close to an income. I did pick up quite a bit about seo and how to research markets, and that has provided an income.

Shame we don't see anything like this on here anymore.

I have one and it still sits at #1 on google, but the commission is VERY small.

A LOT of people simply grabbed the domains and the never did anything with them, didn't even attempt to - that really annoyed me! I even contacted one who had grabbed one I would have liked offering to buy it, never even got a reply.
