You should pick your domain extension based on relevancy to your website, branding considerations, availability and the likelihood of it being remembered. I would say .com domain names should be your first choice because that is what a lot of people gamble on when they can't remember the full address, not because of any SEO benefits.
Even if somewhere in Google's black box of ranking factors the domain extension is used, it won't be so heavily weighted as to override incoming links and on-site optimisation to such an extent it prevents you from ranking. Doing a totally unscientific search for "voucher codes" (mainly because I noticed this, this morning) I see vouchercodes.me.uk is ranked on page 2, and thats got to be a competitive keyword at the moment.
