What way of paying for any SEO services is most likely give the biggest benefits? If you've got any experience of paying for SEO services or if you offer them yourself then let me know what you'd recommend (although I might think you're being a bit bias).

    link building!

Im bias clearly but for me thats your best bet.
Not buying links but spending money on a link builder to spend time on your site and building links, and even having them do some consultancy so you can learn and possibly implement some ideas in the future.

How much link building would you get for 1k in terms of time and effort, obviously can't ask how many links as obtaining links is not guaranteed unless you pay for them, which is not the right way...

I generally do most of my SEO myself, however the time and labour intensive tasks such as 'submissions' I generally sub out to someone else. As long as I know (and have some say) in exactly what they are going to do I don't mind paying them to do it if it saves me time and skin on my finger tips.

Although I would probably struggle to spend as much as £1000 on this for just one site and in one sitting...

It doesn't all need to be spent in one go. What kind of things do you get people to do for you?

Things like manual directory submissions to human edited directories. Although each one provides just a tiny amount of link love they are still worth submitting to in quantity. I would go mad having to sit down and copy and paste into the forms of 500 directories.

Also things like multiple blog comments and article submission as well as article writing.

    Hi,

I would like to give you an idea:

    - For that money you can have me in your offices for 3 days, teaching you SEO, to you, someone of your staff or some student that you are planning to train... If you see that in a long term basis ,it could be better for you... What I will teach you it cannot be found on the internet, I have my own scripts and techniques... You will get the same "know how" that I use in my SEO company.

    - The other option is to contact someone who knows SEO and ask him what can he do for that money and what results you can expect from it...

from here it's up to you

    Agree entirely with James here.

'Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime'

£1000 in itself isn't going to rock the wolrd of SEO in any industry. Creating links will help, but pointless without on page seo and keyword strategy. On page SEO isn't going to deliver results without targeted, quality links.

Both of which are an ongoing process, not a one off fee.

Learning SEO might well be your best bet?

    I agree...

I personally feel that there is milage in SEO training for SMEs. SEO is an ongoing task that needs daily attention, if you contracted every single aspect of it out to a genuine professional it would costs £1000s every year. Learning how it works, what to do etc etc is essential. Even if you choose to contract out, some knowledge will ensure you hand the work over to the RIGHT person......

I might spend the money on an industry conference as you tend to bump into the good people at such events.

I would also spend £14.99 of it on David Viney's "Get to the top on Google", as it will at least help you to have a basic knowledge of the field and give you some food for thought.

I'd also go to the pub - taking a few SEOists with me and getting them drunk

    Thanks everyone.

I am more interested in learning the best things to do but I'm not too sure about spending money on being taught SEO any more. I've been reading about and practising SEO for a couple of years. Recently I bought sitepoints's SEO kit which costs $200 and don't think it taught me anything I didn't already know.

Getting the on-page stuff right is free, so my £1000 would be on link building, directories, and paid for links.
