After reading many different opinions on seo i decided to just try and do the basic correctly, alt tags, htags, strong etc and none spammy naturaly written unique text.

So using all that i decided to build a test site and see what happens.

The site went live in January this year, and in the first few days was indexed by google and started to receive traffic via longtail keywords.

Since then the serps traffic has increased month on month but with a worrying trend.

What happens is for the first half on a given month, the serps traffic increases day on day then in the secound half nearly completely dissapears.

I have seen this in March and April and Im seeing it again this month, although the traffic levels seem to be increasing again earlier.

I understand Google does play around with new sites for a while, but i havent heard of traffic fluctuations like this.

Could someone please take a look at my on site seo and give any opnions/advice they can please? pre-pay-as-you-go.co.uk :tup

I see the same on well established sites that have been listed for years. Not only do they change through out the month, they also shift about on a daily basis. I know certain days of the week they'll rank higher than the rest of the week. The only thing to do is make hay whilst the sun shines. With the ongoing Google dance and new innovations in search, it's going to get a lot worse imo.

    Thanks for the reply DioBach.

One positive has come from the Google traffic fluctuations though.

Its forced me to put more time and effort into my off site efforts, its early days yet. But hopefully if i put the work in i may see some reward

I don't know the market very well, but is it possible that it's the punters, not Google?

I'm thinking people who are looking to buy pre-pays get their wages at the end of the month, so they're flush for a couple of weeks. Then when money starts to run low in the second half of the month they cut back on spending (and searching)

I have a very strong weekly pattern on one of my sites, and it's because of the type of job people have and the hours/days they work (very low searches at the weekend, strongest Tues, Weds)

    Just a thought

    Cheers, Jon

I understand what your trying to say but, it doesnt ring true for me.

If you look at prepay from this point of view, how many parents want to have contact with their kids when theyre out playing? everyone

What parent ( apart from stinking rich ones) would let a kid have a contract handset who can then build up large bills? Not many i would say.

This demographic alone should lead to a large volume of related search, i would assume.

Then there's birthdays, Christmas etc etc the list could go on and with a starting price of around £10 for a handset these days, working paterns shouldnt realy apply.

My advice is to not try and target such a huge competitive market. You will achieve more if you go niche.

I understand that a niche site can bring quicker returns if done correctly, but im in this for the longterm and have done some research to evaluate my chances.

I found that more than 90% of affiliates in the mobile phone vertical go where the money is, and thats in contract handsets, mobile broadband and sim only contracts.

And this isnt just specific to affiliates, most retailers predominantly target the contract market so there is an opportunity to try and build something.

    Whinge/Rant deleted:blush

Can anyone offer some advice please
