    Microsoft and Yahoo Partnership

Microsoft and Yahoo team up in an attempt to challenge Google

Microsoft and Yahoo have this week agreed upon a deal which sees the two digital giants combine their expertise in an attempt to challenge the monopoly of Google in internet searching.

The deal, announced on Wednesday, will combine the powers of the 2nd and 3rd largest search engines with the aim to finally deliver a service that could have the potential to rival Google. Google currently holds a massive 90.6% market share of search traffic in the UK, compared with Yahoo having a 3.9% share and Microsoft's Bing with 2.4%.

This deal follows Yahoo’s rejection of a $44.6 billion offer for the company from Microsoft last year.

The partnership will see Microsoft, which has recently overhauled its search engine, providing the search technology between both its own search facility Bing.com and all of the Yahoo sites. In return, Yahoo will handle all advertising sales.

What effects will this have on the SEO industry?

The introduction of Bing last month already shook up the search industry, and with this recent collaboration with Yahoo, big changes are afoot.

As Microsoft are providing the search technology to power both its own search facility Bing, as well as the Yahoo search, the current Yahoo algorithms will soon be a thing of the past. It is speculated that with this technology overhaul, current website positioning within the Yahoo search engine will become irrelevant.

This transition of technologies will take time and so the current Yahoo search is not redundant as of yet, however SEO marketers should start looking to the future and begin making optimisation changes now with the foresight of competing within the Bing search engine.

The Bing algorithms are vastly different from that of Google and so SEO professionals must be aware that optimising a website for one particular search engine may ultimately compromise its success in another.

Since the launch of the Bing service, Cube3 Digital have outlined the following parameters that Bing appears to view highly:

    1. Domain Age
Bing appears to put emphasis on how long a domain has been registered. This means that marketers may wish to look to purchase older domains to receive a good position in Bing.
    2. Copy
In most search engines, the amount of copy on the page isn’t usually a huge factor, apart from keyword frequency. However, Bing appears to really like pages with 300+ words present.
    3. Out Links
With Google especially, out linking to other websites is avoided where possible as it can potentially lower the Page Rank score. On Bing, out linking actually appears to be smiled upon.
    4. Blogs
Google seems to appreciate blog posting more than Bing. This is especially true when recent news events occur and bloggers battle with major news websites for high search page listings.
    5. Title Tags
While title tags are of major importance in Google, Bing appears to weight these much more heavily. Keyword rich title tags with strong relevancy to the page content is normal SEO best practice; however this will prove even more vital within Bing.

These are only a small selection of the differences in SEO protocol between Google and the new Bing (Yahoo) search engines.

    SEO just got harder!

Personally, I believe the Bing search algorithm to be much more intuitive that Google and all in all, more accurate. However the massive uphill battle Bing has to face is Google's massive 'household name' advantage.

I think it will be much more of a public relations battle when all is said and done rather than a technological one.

Sources have also said that even though Bing will be powering the search on all Yahoo sites, the trade name 'Bing' will not be prominant and may just appear as a size 8 font sub-title. When challenging Google this will never work. I think the only way Bing will come anywhere near Google's market share dominance is to maximize the exposure to its name; Extreme Brand Awareness campaigns!
