I don't think it is actually naming the image file a keyword, but using keyword(s) in the alt and title tags. So many people don't use these tags.
How is it that you get good results from images on google?
I am told that if i name the image a keyword then that will get great results.. but i am not sure.
Could someone share there views on this.
Thanks in advance,
-Andy

Having keywords as alt text on the images are always a good option (SEO wise) and does help in some way or other, but chances are really less to get some sales coming your way from the searches coming from image.google.com or something similar.

If it involves you going back through 100,s of pages and changing ALT text and image file names, i wouldn't bother. you need to think where you're time is best being spent.
if you are creating a new site, i'd always give insert relevant ALT text and give the images a 'nice' name. Takes two seconds and can increase overall page relevancy for those terms you are targeting.
I enjoyed this post from SEOmoz on all you'd even need from an on-page optimization persepective...
I think both are important. You need to optimize Images by naming them with keywords and also have to use alt text to get better and fast rankings. I am not telling it just by reading Image SEO article. I do have a blog on wallapaper and I have optimized it well and getting plenty of visitors from google image search.
Yes, it makes sense to name an image of a black cat (for example) 'black-cat.jpg' rather than 'image98nmj.jpg'I am told that if i name the image a keyword then that will get great results.. but i am not sure.
It won't make a massive difference to your search performance but every little helps.
It can also have it's downsides if you end up having a lot of bandwidth wasted if hosted jpgs rnak well in google search. People looking specifically for images generally don't spend (or even bother reading your page, they are after the image only)

Putting some keywords on the Alt Attribute of the IMG tag is good to use. (seo wise). But
never to stuff it with lots of keywords. It's better to put descriptions that describe the image you are trying to present to the user.
