On many forums you can add your domain name into a personal profile which can be accessed by other forum members. Does this page count as a link or is only on forum posts?

Waste of time and effort mate - forum links are for stalkers, they don't serve no other purpose

It depends what kind of site it is really but generally speaking the easier a link is to get than the less value it will have.

Obviously the best links are the ones you don't ask for - otherwise called editorial links.
To get these you'll need to have some compelling content that people will want to share with others. This takes some doing and will come so long as you try to be different and useful rather than just doing what everyone else is.
OK, this doesn't help you to start with but it ought to be a long term aim?

In the short term, and to get started then obviously try and swap links with fellow member of the forum - if you don't ask you won't get.
A few directory links are OK, but don't waste too much time on this.
Writing articles for sites like ezine or other blogs is also a good way of getting a link and building reputation.
Forum comments - on topic and not spammy, again are useful in moderation.
Press releases - once in while can help - be imaginative and don't overdo it.

Hope that helps buy as you'll already know, there are no simple solutions? Keep plugging away and eventually the links will come - then it's your turn to be choosy

Web2.0 sites are good for easy backlinks. Join a load of them and fill-in your profile. Some will allow anchor text in sections like "hobbies", "interests" etc which is even better.

Just make sure your profile is publicly viewable, if you have to sign-in before you can see your profile then your link won't count.

Also bookmarking sites are good for easy links.

Articles, squidoo lenses, hubpages etc are good and you can also link them together to improve the quality of the linkjuice back to your site. (linkwheel)

I think forum profile link is nofollow, but you can use a certain plugin to see if whether they are dofollow or not, so the most effective way is building a decent website, and then they will link to you automatically

I think forum posting must be very effective when we consider the amount of 'SEO experts' that post pointless replies on this forum and sometimes to threads that are nearly a year old.

If you stick to just one kind of links, it will not benefit you at all. The best way is to develop different kinds of links (Forum Posting, Blog Post Contextual links, comment links, links from other relevant sites in your niche). If you do so each link will give some benefit to your site in SERPS. Just my 2 cents..

What is the sense of creating profile without even having a single post. If you are actively participating in the discussion, your signature will be exposed. And that counts more than the link you provide in your profile.
