It definitely will be interesting to see what comes of this in the near future and the impact that it will have across the board. If website speed does become a crucial factor it may present an issue for budget web hosting providers that overload their servers.
I think it's too early to tell, but not early to start planning!

Yea, I just hope this isn't a dismal failure.
Great insights. I raised the same concern quite some time ago because the loading speed of a site should clearly be classified into the overall end user experience thus taken into consideration in ranking a site.

There's now an option to check site speed in Google's Webmaster Tools. It's in the beta section from what I recall.
