2 weeks ago I bought 2 domains a .co.uk and a .info, I submitted them both to google via webmaster tools and signed up to analytics, I have done a small bit of link building for the .info and none for the .co.uk yet the .co.uk is on the first page of google for the keyword in the domain and the .info hasn't even indexed yet

what was the nature of the link building you did? Where the quality of the links similar?

are the topics of the two sites the same?

I woul say that .info are generally harder to index, but I don't have concrete proof on that.

I managed to get a .info to rank #1 for some very competitive phrases years ago but haven't tried recently.

The bots should be around soon and the .info site's pages indexed before too long, unless there's some bad history with the domain name or you've gone ott with the 'small bit of linkbuilding'. The big G will normally first return the .info's homepage and then add additional pages for a site: search, although from a UK affiliate perspective a .info may well be expected to underperform when compared to the equivalent .co.uk.

'the .co.uk is on the first page of google for the keyword in the domain'

Unless you've unexpectedly managed to reg a premium .co.uk name that slipped through the drop, I'm assuming that the keyword isn't the most competitive - something like a small place name, very specific item or service.

Are we comparing like for like here? If the .info and .co.uk only contain identical keywords like keyword.co.uk and .info then concentrate on the .co.uk first. If your URLs are more like keyword-superfluous-words.co.uk and .info then I'd put the .info back in the cupboard entirely. If you've got names more like keyword.info and keyword-superfluous-word.co.uk I think anyone would think that the former looks more compact and memorable.

I'll agree with getvisible's belief that they can be harder and slower to get indexed and they're certainly more difficult to get ranking in UK results than the .com or a .uk. A couple of seeded links at your other sites just won't cut the mustard for any competitive search terms. I'd also reckon that they're easier to get booted down the rankings if you go over the top with the bad SEO.

Aim at respectable long term rankings with a .info, not any instant top site miracles. If you put in some niche angle articles now and then and link to it sensibly then you should begin to see some longtail traffic.

The proliferation of Made For Adsense scraper sites on .infos around 2004 may still cast a shadow when it comes to their reputation but a good site should be able to overcome this. The attraction is managing to find a useful search term/phrase under the .info when you couldn't hope to find the .com or .co.uk free.

I have seen other webmasters' .info sites do well in some of the following circumstances - single product microsites, lots of content, less competitive sectors, lots of decent links or aggressive marketing. In the past we had a one word place name .info and with a page of text and 16 pictures it sat on top of Yahoo UK and cropped up in Google & Microsoft results for absolutely ages on some relevant searches, without any real linkbuilding. As it's not been developed it's really sunk now but it's aged (regged 2005) and still generates enough traffic to justify its renewal each year.

The .info can be a useful domain; it's flexible in meaning and easily used for a global site with a memorable generic URL. Dirt cheap new registrations mean that the churn of .infos is pretty huge but also means that you can sometimes find some pretty useful two word names available. Annual renewal costs are more than than a .uk name so remember to avoid registering loads of useless ones on a whim, just because they're for pence.

Seconded. I bought my first .info recently as it was the only thing that was left for the keywords I wanted and had the same issue as the OP.

Have anyone also found you don't seem to get a boost for exact match keyword domains? Or is that just me?

I can third this. My Sig contains two sites with tld's i have never bought before a .info and .eu. Of the two .eu is by far the easiest, obviously given a choice i would use .co.uk and .com.

My Bristol Airport parking site, has enough links and SEO to be at least on Page 2 and its number 53 in results!! This is one experiment that has gone bad. Never a .info domain again for me...

Haha my .info is also an airport parking site I spotted that was free!! I did spot a couple of really nice furniture ones that I will now also not be buying.

How did your .eu do? I've got one of those to test that I've not yet developed. Maybe it's doing better as it's less competition than the airport parking site?

My list of 'no go's' now seems to be:

    .me.uk
    .org
    .info

I don't doubt others have had no problems but they don't seem to get an exact match benefit like other domains do and the .org's seem very difficult to rank in google.co.uk. Maybe it's just me but I'll be avoiding them in future.

I've seen them rank, they just don't seem to get a boost for being an exact match on the keywords for me, same trouble as I've had with the .info.
