Hi,

I am having issues with an SEO company we have employed. This is what they have done and are doing. I think this is a couple of days work... but what do i know!!! Anyone who knows about SEO could you please advise whether the below activities should take 6 months.. or is there anyone else that can offer a better service!!

Hey Alan,

What is the URL of the site?
What keyword/keyword phrases are you targeting?
Who is the company you're using?
What is the cost?

On the surface the services you describe sound fairly basic, but reasonable.
HOW MUCH of each activity is being completed, and what are the SPECIFIC deliverables from each activity.

Without knowing the details any response would be effectively meaningless.

If the company you're using is instanttrafficcreation, you're already hosed.

debatable from an SEO point of view, cleaning tags and checking for relevance would be of more value (happy for you to PM me a couple of URLs so that I can see what they have done)

Robots.txt Optimization Done

never heard of anyone 'optimising' a robots.txt file before. All the robots.txt file does is tell the bots where they are not allowed to go.

whatever that means. there is no need to submit a sitemap

Article Submission On Going

is this being done manually or via a script. who writes the articles and checks them for SEO relevance?

Directory Submission On Going

rather depends on which directory they are submitting to. Can't be very many directories related to your industry.

Ranking Monitoring (Daily Basis) On Going

a waste of time. Ranking rarely changes on a daily basis and monitoring on such a basis is of zero benefit

Video Updating in Youtube & Monitoring Done

this is more marketing related than SEO

Google Anlaytics Traffic Analysis On Going

not recommended. Why are they making all your visitor data available to Google. This is highly confidential data relating to your marketing position and the last place you want your data to go is to one of the biggest data-mining companies in the business. I would demand that they remove all Google Analytics scripts with immediate effect and analyse either the server access logs or a CGI hosted script.

Why? Unless you are in the social media business, what is the benefit of this activity? What benefit to you to have your content hosted by and earning income for some other business?

Manual or script submission. Who writes the press releases and checks for publication?

how does this differ from directory submission above? Usually the directories want you to submit so it is more probable that their sales teams will be phoning you to try to capture your business. yell.com is free or paid for display adverts.


To give you an idea, even for a 10 page site, I would not expect to take less than 3 to 6 months to SEO a site. That, however, does not mean 6 months of work. The time taken dependents on the search engines and their crawling cycle. Each modification has to be evaluated, and it can take weeks or months from modification before the site's ranking is updated for that modification. Assume 2 to 4 weeks on average between modification and evaluation.

There are 2 noticeable omissions from your above lists:
1. the SEOing of content (much more important than fiddling with the meta tags)
2. modifying layout (if necessary) to ensure that it is optimised for search engine crawling and relevance of primary and secondary keywords.

In fact, everything they are doing looks like window dressing.
