Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of developing your website to increase its visibility on the search engine results. SEO affects the natural or organic listings (as opposed to the sponsored or PPC results) in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Recent studies highlighted that around 90% of all search traffic clicks are for organic (as opposed to paid) results, but only around 11% of a typical search marketing budget is assigned to SEO. As a result of this disequilibrium there are many opportunities to get fantastic ROI from SEO.
Plus, unlike PPC, you are not charged when searchers click through to your site, so the benefits of ranking well are clear.

So how do you improve your search engine visibilty?

When looking to improve your search engine visibility a number of factors should be considered:
    1. Technical Factors –can the search engines understand and index your content?
    2. On Page Factors – this encompasses the content itself, plus internal linking, navigation, and how this is presented to the search engines.
    3. Links – inbound links (i.e. other sites which link to your site) count like votes and are broadly accepted as one of the most important factors in terms of ranking.

    3 Non-Techincal SEO Tips for 2010…

Not all aspects of SEO are technical - follow our non-techincal SEO tips to help improve your rankings in 2010:
    1. Think creatively about links. There are many ways to get links –and the best links are those your competitors cannot get. Can you persuade your existing clients to link to you? Or perhaps other businesses or organisations that complement rather than compete with your own? Maybe you can sponsor an event – the organisers will be happy to link to you, plus there’s the possibility of picking up links from various other sites which cover the event.
    2. Beware of marketing speak! Make sure you refer to the products and services you offer using the same terminology as your customers – e.g. ‘professional cleaners’ not ‘domestic hygiene operatives’.
    3. Create new content. Search engines like websites which are updated regularly. Consider incorporating a corporate blog – and update it regularly.
