@kimarie - I also thought that Google didn't like a whole load of links turning up quickly and saw this as link spam quite quickly and can even penalise you for it.
Though one of my sites has a link from a popular dofollow blog and for some reason this link has turned up on every page of the site (2000+ pages) so on backlink checkers this appears as 2000+ backlinks...which would have appeared in the space of a few minutes. As yet this has not had a negative effect, but perhaps its just because they are all one domain with the same anchor text and the bot can tell its not spam.

The guys at google aren't stupid. Adding a shedload of rubbish links worked great five years ago but now it'll just destroy your site. Period. Try and think like a search engine designer with a brief to exclude spammy sites; In nature links appear gradually over a long period of time so you'd give credit for that, a whole heap at once and then zilch for ages is such an obvious spam marker that you'd kick it out straight away.
Gaming search engines isn't easy, they've been at it a long time and know all the tricks so if you can't get links naturally you're better adding content, content, and even more content than buying links from people who will will probably be selling links from the same pages to anyone else who'll buy them, which will dilute their already-tiny relevance even furthur.
Incidentally we seem to be getting a lot of spammy threads from first time posters these days.
