pop into the web archive wayback machine thingy![]()
I bought a domain from a guy last month, since that time I've let his site stay on the domain as it was doing until my new site for the domain is ready as it was better to have a site there than nothing.
However, as of yesterday he obviously closed his hosting he had for it and the site is now gone ( I did only buy the domain and not the actual website).
What is the best way to have the domain now, just stick a "Website coming soon" page up or a basic wordpress site, as the new site won't be ready for a couple of weeks and don't want Google giving too many "minus points" to the domain in the meantime?
Cheers

If I was you, I would create a holding page with some of the key words that your eventual site will want.
For example, with my Crookes website, I haven't had time to make the site yet, but I've put up a holding page with some of the key words on it.

The best way will be...using wayback tools...to find out your pages..stored on line.....in various caches...like in google caches..
i bet you can copy everything from those pages...if you were not on a cms...
Almost everything can be recoverd from there.
and you wil have 70 % of your site content back..in time....in one day..a live...
and then you can fix..the remaingin issues....
good luck..
I hope it will help....
Thanks for the replies guys
As Mogga says, as I only bought the domain and not the site I wouldn't go down the route of the wayback machine to try and copy the original content.
I was more after seeing if people thought a Maintenance page or a basic wordpress site or something else would be best for a week or 2 was all.

As you have no rights over the old content, I too would just go with an initial holding page and a paragraph or two of relevant text. Also, take a couple of minutes to create a custom 404 error page.
Could you not contact the previous seller and ask if he/she would mind you using the original content on your site for a further two weeks, until your new site is ready?
On a separate note, I would keep a list of the URL's from the previous site now, and set up appropriate redirects for when the new site goes live.
