Lets suppose I have AffiliateSite.co.uk which is trying to rank for thousands of long tail but competitive affiliate terms.

I have some unrelated, but very link worthy, content (e.g. scripting examples, Wordpress tips, free software tools). Is there any value in serving these from e.g. AffiliateSite.co.uk/tools-tips/ and obviously linking that page back to home.

Would the home page gain any Page Rank boost helping ranking for the affiliate terms? Or, would the Page Rank stay largely isolated to the 'unrelated' part of the site, defeating the point?

Any advice from those who really know their SEO welcomed. Cheers.

Try and forget about pagerank. I know that we've all been taught over and over again how important it is, but that is all FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). What will matter is the anchor text used, the authority of the site you are linking from, the links into that site and the rest of the outgoing links too. Ideally they should all be related to the search terms you want to promote but it isn't essential, the site you link to will still benefit, the search engine algos aren't intelligent enough at the moment to differentiate between themes which are related, however distantly, and those which are completely irrelevant

I agree - dont be too worried about it - though it does help if your theme, title or developed tools for sharing are based around the main domains keyword targets.

Just concentrate on what you can manipulate (content, titles, themes) rather than what you cant (the google algo).

If you think one of our ideas warrant a separate domain then go for it.

I believe - though it not said anywhere other than in my head - that google 'sections' your site into a category after being in the serps and its collected data for a while. If you started a campsite website and it was high ranking in the campsite section and then published a page on boat insurance - you would probably find you would rank better for that article of you published it on an boat insurance site rather than on the campsite one. - but if you titled the article and added content about the joy of effectively camping out in your boat and wanted insurance then it would probably suit either site.

So maybe on your unrelated sites write some new pages that mix the keywords around and then link from them. It may not make any human sense maybe just be a vague and tenuous link but , as has been said, the google algo is not that intelligent, maybe like the intelligence of a sheep. Not like a primate or anything. lol
