I've been looking at various companies with regard to link-building recently, and as you can imagine, all are suggesting anything between 500-2000 directory submissions from $0.0000001 to £xxx per submission.

I've used ArticleBot before but with no known benefit. Well, none that I can attribute to them anyway.

Quick question .. are bulk directory submissions worth anything these days?

Not on their own of course but as part of a bigger link-building campaign.

I'd also like to know the answer to this from someone in the know,

My personal experience is mainly on crap sites they have helped a bit,

I know this as some of my really rubbish sites only have free dir links that I spent a couple of hours myself adding and they have been indexed and have some rankings with only those directory links in place.

One of my sites ranked quite well with 250 directory links I paid a company to add for me - it was for a broadband term so would have had competition too, the site has slipped in the last 2 weeks though so maybe Goggles devaluing them a bit now.

One of my better sites I had added to 200 general directorys recently and saw a 3 position climb for a couple of weeks, then it dropped again.

Would love to hear other peoples thoughts too?

Ah....I m too in a kind of blurred vision about it....it looks like....submission has....very low weight to contribute..to web appearance....although there are some quality directories...that i think only....needs to be requested to accept over sites......"....for bulky submission...i dont agree...buddies..."

    What do you say....?

Directories don't carry the weight they used to. There are millions of directories out there these days. Some good, some bad. Some are not even worth knowing about. They're spammed to death, not maintained properly or even blacklisted. The only directories I'd worry about the big ones (dmoz and such, but it takes forever) and maybe some niche ones that have at least a PR 0. PR 0 is different from PR N/A - if it's N/A then it's probably not even picked up by Google. I'd be wary about paying for thousands of submissions. Ask to see the list of where they submit to and check them out for yourself first - or at least spot check them.

Oh, and many of them require a link back to their site. Simple, two way exchanges like this aren't very good for your site either. Only use ones that give one-way links.

Do you get penilised for sending exactly the same article to directories or is it fine so long as all the content on your site is unique?

when you say article, you mean the article on your site?

if so there is nothing wrong with submitting the same page... however, if you submit multiple pages with the same content you will get in trouble.
