It needs to be more "special" before it indexes more. More links in etc
Just a question, does anyone know of a reason why G would not index most pages in a Sitemap? i understand they say they wont always index them all but i have a site which has 154 pages indexed out of 2248 pages.
Would a problem of some sort cause this?
Note:
Not an Aff site
100% unique content on every page with an average 250words per page
No adverts of any sort
Information site, no buying selling of any sort
All pages available by navigation
Webmaster Tools shows no errors, it did show 1 duplicate title tag which i fixed a month ago.
Thanks

Thanks, that explains it. it only has a handfull of links a just one .gov.uk
Im totally useless at getting links, nearly all my sites run on just one link, if i could build links or even find someone trustworthy to do it i could be a millionare!

I think set top level pages on first in site map and set priority also
I don't comment often, but feel the need to this time. I hate to see so much hard work go to waste.
For you to have 2000+ pages of unique content is amazing - congratulations sir! But for you to not promote that content is an absolute waste. It's like having the worlds best antiques shop, just waiting to be discovered by the world - but then you decide to keep the window shutters down and don't tell anyone about it.
The only way those pages will ever be found in Google is by link-building (at least a little bit). Full stop.
If you have loads of visitors and you make your money elsewhere, then that's great. But I'm guessing Google traffic would be valuable to you, seeing as you are asking the question.
Given that you've invested either time or money in fresh, unique content, it's an absolute must that you invest time or money in linkbuilding, either doing it yourself or getting a team involved to do it for you. It's not actually difficult to get *some* links, and crappy links will be enough to get your site indexed most of the time. It's an abundance of *good* links that will take a while to acquire. Take time out and do the research, then put your back into doing it!
One note on emailing others asking for a backlink - do research in this area! There are lots of blog articles out there from the pro's telling us what the perfect link request email looks like. Use these resources.
And don't expect results from 5-10 email requests. If your website hadn't produced any sales after 5-10 visitors would you give up? Maybe if you'd only recieved one sale after 1000 visits, then you might want to refine your techniques - but until then you'd keep plugging away. This lesson should be used when link requesting. Commit to asking for a thousand links from a thousand webmasters, tweaking your approach as you go. Then, in two months, review your results and see whether it's worth continuing with.
Or, partner with someone who LOVES the promotion side of internet marketing. I for one would much rather spend my days looking for ingenious ways of acquiring links than writing 2000+ pages of content! Perhaps your skills can be used in conjuction with others?
OK, I'm done. Back to my tea and toast. :-)
Best of luck to you.
Brian
totally agree - most people can't write content and don't want to pay for it so this is where you'll get your links. Just be selective who you give it to.
As a side note - if someone decides to copy your non-indexed content it will look lik you've knicked it when googlebot does eventually visit![]()
Thanks for the replies, the content is a 13 year archive of newspaper content (a local newspaper) which we scanned and character recognised. I myself hate writing articles, so employ someone to write for me.
Have got another link from a council .gov.uk and now google appears to be crawling like mad, fingers crossed.
Mogga, am looking into the article sites, thanks
Cheers
Just as an update, i got a couple of good links and now G has indexed 2236 of the 2248 in the sitemap.
Thanks for tips
