I have seen many people in this SEO field who are worrying only about getting links from higher PR sites so that their is an increase in PR of their own site. So my question is increasing PR can take a site to top position in search result of Google? Please share your answers and experiences.

SEO has changed a bit over the last few years. There's no doubt that page ranks still counts a lot - and that higher quality links are so much more valuable than low quality ones - but theme has become a stronger and stronger factor in the equation, as has "buzz" in social media. Rather than concentrating on an abstract concept like page rank, try to look at getting links from respected players in your niche, or getting people talking about your site in social media. It takes a bit more effort, but is the only way to get a long term, safe improvement in rankings for your site.

Google rankings are all about links and links. The more backlinks you get better will be the search rankings. As far as PR is concerned, getting links from high PR websites or authority website is always helpful to build authority of a website and its ability to rank in search engines.

I definitely agree that it is worth getting your site linked from and discussed on social media sites (digg, mr wong etc).

this has the benefit of creating a buzz about your site which seems to get the site pushed high up in google. I've had sites up to first positoin on google with 0 pagerank before and believe this was just due to a small number of backlinks, seo optimization and buzz from social networking.

Yes it can, that's why some site owner do SEO and other link building strategy to increase page rank of their sites and if your site have a good PR it can possibly goes on the top page in Google.

I'm finding that links from low or no pr sites with very few outgoing links can be far better at boosting a page than links from high pr sites with many outgoings. Conversely I'm finding links from any pages named "links.html" or something like that to be pretty well useless, possibly because these pages have little or no real content. Unfortunately if you exchange links with other sites this is the sort of page you are likely to end up on.

Getting to the top for a useful phrase is unlikely to be achieved by PR alone but it CAN be done by having a little bit of relevant copy - no more than about 250 words - and lots of relevant backlinks from related sites. It's important that these links come in over a period of time rather than all at once (which can cause the page to soar up the SERPs then crash in flames) and that new links are added continuously.

I am watching google website shuffling very care fully and I came to a conclusion that if you have specific content on your website, only then links can benefit you and Google will also give you reasonable place in its search engine. As per latest review of Google, PR-4 or more websites can laid down , if they are supported with their content.
