    Hi,

I've just finished my first website and have submitted it to google, bing and yahoo to be indexed. Could someone give me a timescale each one usually takes?

I've heard Google takes a while if you submitted, but significantly less time if you post a link on an existing website, however I've searched everywhere and everywhere uses the 'nofollow' reference.

Couple of things you can do.

    - Ensure you have a Robots.txt file
    - Sign-up to Google Webmaster Tools
    - Add a HTML Sitemap to your site and link to it from your footer
    - Add a XML Sitemap to your site and link to it from your footer
    - Add the XML Sitemap to your Robots file and Google account
    - Write some articles (each one unique) and submit them to eZine articles, remembering to add a link to your site in the Author's Bio at the bottom of the page.
    - Write some unique articles and ask people on this forum (like me) to publish them on their blogs.

Finally, don't worry about how long it takes to index, just keep adding great content and adding some relevant backlinks.

Hi gadget, Thanks for the reply.

I thought adding a robots.txt file simply tell the robot of what you dont want to be included in indexing? Are HTML and XML sitemaps both necessary?

Well thats what I've been trying to do, find backlinks from sites in the gaming industry, but its easier said than done.

Good syntax for the Robots.txt file would be to use the Allow: command too. No harm in adding it if it helps.

The HTML sitemap is for your human visitors, but as they are links, the Bots will follow them too, which will help with indexing.

If its gaming, approach bloggers. If you can write an article that talks about the 'subject' then this'll give you a broader reach. For example, write about horses rather than horse racing, boxers rather than boxing, how bad England were last night etc

    Hi Cdr,

Good advice from gadget there - particularly the bit about not worrying about it and just concentrating on getting backlinks. I'd also add that social media sites can be a good way of alerting search engines to the existence of your site - the links might not carry too much weight, but most social media sites are pretty extensively indexed and spidered regularly, so twittering about your new site or linking from facebook can be a quick and easy way of letting Google know your site is out there.

Of course, it's only after that that the real work begins in gaining quality backlinks...

you can submit your website in Web Directories, different C Class IPs. Their are many DoFollow Directories, Bookmarking, Submitting URL's in Search Engine using manual submit. Use Forums signature as link back to your site, post relevant Blog Comments.

In short show your presence to search engines.

You can also use W3C Markup Validation Service to validate your website for any HTML/CSS error
