I spent the last 1,5hr submitting my travel related website to several UK travel directories but while doing it I started thinking.. How effective is it?

From a visitors perspective I guess its pretty much useless as people use Google these days so there's no need for a directory..

But from a SEO perspective, how valuable are they? Does Google give them any value? Would the value be simmilar to permanent links?

Another reason for asking is that I have received several offers to do manual directory submissions to 100/200/500+ directories

I know nobody here is working for Google so I dont expect any firm answers but let me know your thoughts and experiences

    Thanks

Having links on directories with high PR and are set to 'DoFollow' will help. You can test if the link is 'DoFollow' (which means it passes on the link juice) by installing the SEO Book plugin for firefox. Alternatively, a Google search will bring up some, but double check them.

However, most directories are not worth the time and effort, and I have found some actually do more harm than good. Aside from a handful of directories, it can be prove to be a big waste of time. In particular, the 'directory submission services for $49' are nothing but junk, and could do your website long term damage.

The only directory links in my experience worth paying for are the Yahoo and BOTW (best of the web), although expensive, they have been really good for rankings for me. Make sure any paid directories have to go through a manual human check BEFORE you get listed on the directory - Google is wise to low rent directories charging for listings and just taking your money - very few are worth paying.

If you want a quick and easy PR 9 DOFollow backlink from linkedin, then check out my video:

In short - spend the money/time writing new content for the website, that'll give you much more benefit than a bunch of low quality directories.

    Hope that helps!

Getting links form directory is help full for seo point of view but as Andrew said not much of a help in long term. You better write some good articles and post them on article directories that helps.

Low quality directory submission can make some difference on low competition search terms but generally it's not worth paying for.

Depending on your niche and the current link profile of your site you might not even want to pay for BOTW/Yahoo/Yellow Pages. However I would recommend DMoz as it's free.

Don't believe the lies - well sourced, human edited directories (like local directories or niche specific ones) can provide some benefit.

(ps - was that just spam?)

By choosing our directory submission service you will increase your inbound links. There are thousands of smaller directories around the world that would be interested and relevant to your site content. We at WHDesign have been developing a system over the past 5 years to catalogue as many as possible. All of these smaller directories are managed by human editors who physically review all applications to ensure that your site is allocated to the most relevant category and your listing will provide a valuable ‘one way’ link and description to list your website.

Directory submissions from "dofollow" directories that do allow you to vary the anchor text are always good value for money. Just make sure the directory submission is done under your product related section..also make sure they are high PR directories.
