I've read in numerous places that you shouldn't use automatic backlink software to get a bunch of links in one go. I don't really plan on using it as I don't think there will be any benefits, but I don't see how it can cause a penalty of any kind.

I have seen people saying that you will get flagged as spam from doing this. This can't be possible can it? Otherwise you can just run the software on any new competitors URLs to get them marked as spam, and dropped in the SERPs?

It can happen - especially if your competitor uses grey hat tactics elsewhere on their site.

The official line is that it doesnn't happen but check out this link from SE Round Table for more details

All the search engines look out for spikes in the linking profile. When links are aquired naturally the graph tends to be fairly level.

Thw worst thing to do is to throw a load of links at a new site, and then no more. The site will sink like a stone because it's reasonable to assume that a site which gets a lot of genuine links when it's first launched will attract commensurately more later.

Google used to say that "no" external factors (like competitors pointing spammy links at your site) could harm rankings but for the last couple of years they've said that "hardly any" external factors will; a very pertinent difference.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose they must have worked out a good way of identifying if it is likely to be the site owner or a competitor who has created the spam links.

Link Farms. A link farm is a site which exists for the sole purpose of listing links, sometimes for free but more often for a fee. Avoid link farms where possible because once search engines discover them you will receive no benefit of the link from them and it may even add a penalty to your ranking (although this is by no means certain).

Access link is the body of the entry. In fact, is the signature. Every time we publish in the forum, the backlinks search engine have in our firms Web site. In your case, you must shorten the URL, search engine sees your website links.
