A simple question to all the SEO experts out there...
How long did it take you to get your website on top of google.

    Weeks, months or years?

    Thats an open ended question.

Top 10 for the main terms? secondary ones? any terms?

I could get top 10 for "blonde monkeys with spikey armpitts" in less than 1 week, but I wouldnt expect to get top 10 for "Free porn" in the same time

generally if it is a competitive term then around a year should be a healthy target. But it can vary greatly.

    Why couldnt i?

I would imagine that as soon as this thread is spidered by googe that it will be number 1 of 1 for that term. Easy.

In answering the initial question I feel anywhere between 12 and 24 months is a suitable target. (On average)

Should not be too hard, specially if you spell armpit with 2 p's.

But that s not much of a challenge, I was more thinking of keywords like " car, travel, loan, insurance, free downloads "

Doing SEO for this keywords is a massive job, but some people still manage to get pretty good listing for relevent travel related keywords... and they did so with pretty bad looking sites. The sites in questions were running for over 3 years before beiing picked up by google.

    The above are highly competitive.

The sites in questions were running for over 3 years before beiing picked up by google.
What do you mean by picked up by google? they were indexed? ranked top 10,000? top 10?

Lets take the term "car" as our example. I would say that if you had a budget in excess of 100k and a team of experts in SEO, Marketing, Development, programming etc.... then you may be able to get top 10 in around 3 years. If you dont have a small fortune and a team of experts then it would be completely out of the question.

I've seen it done for a competitive term in a week... but that's rare, special circumstances, basically. You should start seeing some traffic in a month or so, but only for long or other non-competitive phrases, but I'd agree that a year is a reasonble
