If you have a good search on this forum you will find tons of ideas.
Basically though you'll need more than 1 link from a Blog!
I'm struggling to get my site indexed on the search engines. When I do a site: search on google and the other search engines they all come back with just the homepage as having been indexed.
<a href="http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww.babysleepanswers.co.uk&m eta=">site:www.babysleepanswers.co.uk</a>
I think I managed to get that far by having a link from a Blog. However when I do a link: search on Google it tells me there are no incoming links.
I'm not sure what's going on or what I have to do to get the search engines to index a bit deeper.
Any ideas gratefully received.

I was afraid of that!!!
My wife has been blitzing the baby and parenting forums but they've got some pretty draconian moderators! They don't even like links in sigs - but maybe we're not being subtle enough!

Do a quick Link: search on your competitor websites - that should give you a pretty good idea of where you can get some links from.
Dont use google for checking backlinks as its always very incomplete. yahoo is ok
it is worth checking google, but google does not show all links, best to try msn or yahoo

Hi,
Have you tried submitting a sitemap to Google?
Also, is your menu/navigation java based as this could stop SE's from navigating your site correctly.

Jason
Seekituk is right, submit your sitemap to GG & Yahoo. go to www.sitemaps.org
also, to find more back links on google, try sticking this search string in to the search box...
"+www.WEBSITE.+com" -site:www.WEBSITE.com
change WEBSITE to your url and change .com to .co.uk if necessary.
At the end of the day, more back links is what you need. So check you competitions back links using the above string, and contact their link partners requesting a link exchange. (if they give them a link, why not you?).
Also, submit your site to directories. Some can take ages after submission to include your listing (eg. DMOZ), my advice is submit and forget, move onto the next directory (not thee Next directory, just another directory)
Hope this helps, dave

dave, that tip about the search string is really useful - thank you.
it sure beats the results returned from link:www.mysite.co.uk type searches i've tried before.

I find this tool very useful, especially when analysing my competitors links![]()
Hi all
I was wondering why does that particualr query string return different results from the link:www.mywebsite.co.uk method in GOogle. Is there any added value in using the search string you provided if Google doesn't count it in the Link: enquiy.
Nice tip none the less.
>> I was wondering why does that particualr query string return different results
Because that string asks for all references to the domain name, less pages from the domain itself. The returned pages generally (but not always) have those references as links.
The link: syntax is a special query operator, designed to return a limited subset of link data for a given site. Due to previous abuse, it's been quite badly borked
Thanks very good tip, by the way.![]()
Just thought I'd give an update to all those who have kindly responded to this post.
The Google sitemap did the trick with getting pages indexed. However, all pages bar the home page have gone straight in to the supplemental index. I'm assuming this is because I've got no incoming links from any pages with page rank. Does anybody else have any experience of this?
We're still working on incoming links and we're finding that by adding good content to the site that is starting to slowly happen. Again, if anybody here wants to use our original articles on their own site please feel free - just include a link to us.
One approach that is working well and giving us excellent conversion is by posting on forums. We cover a specific topic and there's plenty of forums out there that discuss it. We've found that by writing helpful articles on our site we are able to link to them without annoying forum moderators.
As I say conversions are high from the forum postings but they only have a lifetime of a couple of days so it's hard work keeping it going.
Anyway, thanks for everybodies help so far. Any other suggestions gratefully received.
