Does anyone have an idea whether Google gives preference for sites showing their adsense ads?

I really don't want to put adsense up on a number of my sites, but my main competitors have - and they're above me!

    .........am I getting paranoid??

    Cheers

    Don't worry.
Displaying Adsense or not displaying "should" make no difference.

Google's whole ethos is that they try to show the most relevant results. Give your visitors what they're looking for and they'll come back. So I seriously doubt that they would indirectly sell rankings like that.

But maybe that's what they want us to think lol

They don't have a beneficial effect in the rankings, although adwords ad's are read along with the rest of the page, so they can up the keyword count a bit.
