I'm not sure how well I can explain this but i'll give it a go. I don't want to give away my niche so i'm gonna try explaining using 'wheelie bins' as an example, here goes.....

While looking for a niche I came across a new idea for myself but i'm not sure if it will work.
According to the keyword tool 'wheeliebin cleaning' gets loads of searches. I stuck this in google and the phrase is flooded, all the obvious wheeliebin-cleaning.co.uk wheeliebincleaning.co.uk etc are gone.
In the same keyword tool I tried 'wheelie bin cleaning' (note the space) this still gets quite a lot of searches. When I tried the phrase in google "wheelie bin cleaning" no one comes up. wheelie-bin-cleaning.co.uk is available so it looks like a winner.

Now the bit I can't get my head around. If I bought wheelie-bin-cleaning.co.uk and optimisted for the phrase "wheelie bin cleaning" would I be competing against the sites that have optimisted for "wheeliebin cleaning".

Please note that this has NOTHING to do with wheelie bins and i've just used this to try get the concept across.

    I hope someone understands!

    Thanks,

    Geoff

As I understand it, google views 'wheelie bin cleaning' and 'wheeliebin cleaning' as different terms, otherwise you would get the same results returned for each of the searches.

So if your site is optimised for 'wheelie bin cleaning', you shouldn't be competing against sites optimised for 'wheeliebin cleaning'.

That's the way that I see it.

But when I was doing the searches I was putting the phrases in speach brackets so it was searching for the exact phrase, i'm not sure if this makes a difference.

This could be fairly obvious, i'm just having a bit of a brain freeze and having trouble getting my head round it. Too many new ideas at once! haha

It won't be as big a factor, but the spacing differences can still pull up those results too, just maybe not as high ranked as you are searching for it!

Anyway, why would you want to look into a wheelie bin niche?

    Type:

    wheelie bin cleaning

    Into:

    http://www.google.co.uk

    you will get these results:

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta=

    These:

    http://www.greencleen.co.uk/

were 2nd when I did the search...

    NOW, type;

    wheeliebin cleaning

    Into:

    http://www.google.co.uk

    you will get these results:

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta=

greencleen.co.uk/ are no where to be seen on the first 7 pages...

    NOW, type;

    greencleen.co.uk

Into the search box on google at THE BOTTOM of the page and select

    "search within results"

You will see that they ARE also listed in the results for:

    wheeliebin cleaning

    Just god knows where.

    Affi's observation:

You ARE technically competing in both arenas (in most cases) although you would be far more competative, in POSITION, for the phrase:

wheelie bin cleaning (using your example).

I would personally optimize your site for "wheelie bin cleaning" AND THEN do a bit of work on more pages with page titles, H tags, anchor links, etc for "wheeliebin cleaning".

Hey presto you are now competing with yourself... or something like that..

If you are confused (and I have just confused myself) drop me a PM and I'll try to ellaborate...

I'm sure there must be an easy way to find out on WHAT PAGE greencleen.co.uk are actually appearing for the search term: "wheeliebin cleaning"

Reminds me of that Joke all this...

Dustbin man says to Chinese bloke one morning..

    "where's ya bin"?

He replies "I been Hong Kong"

Dutsbinman laughs and says "no, where's ya WHEELIE bin?"

Chinese bloke looks miffed and asserts "I WHEELIE been Hong Kong.."

    I'll get my Jacket.....

SPAM POLICE PLEASE NOTE GOOGLE AND/OR GREENCLEEN ARE NOT MY SITES...

Well thanks for the help! I think I'm starting to get my head around it. I think the best way of finding out is to just try it!

To simplify my situation (or not as the case may be). For a phrase with big searches. If you type "wheeliebin cleaning" into google you get thousands of results, but if you type "wheelie bin cleaning" there isn't one!

Obviously if you take the brackets away you get loads of results anyway. But if I was optimised for 'wheelie bin cleaning' would I be at the top of all these results?

I'm new to all this as you've probably guessed!

And just to remind everyone....THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHEELIE BINS....Or the bad jokes that go with them!........yes wheelie!

If you are looking for the true position of any 2,3,4 or 5 word phrase in Google, type it with hyphens.(as this only gives results which use the entire phrase)
Typing in wheeliebin cleaning will give you every site mentioning wheeliebin OR cleaning
Typing in wheeliebin-cleaning will give you only sites which mention wheeliebin cleaning, used as that specific 2 word phrase.
This may help with deciding which domain you try, but remember that nobody remembers hyphens in domains, so search will be the ONLY way you are found..
