search: related:mysite gives me a list of related sites as determined by google.

Is it a worthwhile excercise to try and get back links from the specific sites in results list, or is that just a random list of no more importance than any other related sites?

Related: gives a list of sites that have co-citation data (that's an information theory concept). Essentially, it's a list of sites that people who link to you also link to - your peer group
