Do you have a sample of a page?
I'm currently building a site that's mainly made up of images. The only code change from one page to the other is .. <title>, <meta>, alt tags and of course the images. The images are named in a seo friendly way but there is no on page text.
Is this sufficient to ensure the SEs don't see these pages as duplicate content?
There are close to 500 pages so I'm reluctant to go back in and change the page.
Do you have a sample of a page?
have you included alt tags on the images

If there is no on page text, theres going to be nothing for the search engines to index, so your not going to get good rankings anyway, with or without duplicate content. The images are named in a seo friendly way but there is no on page text.
The on page content is the duplicate part. For example, top nav bar and side nav bar. These are already being picked up well for the holding page I've put up to give the SEs something to index.
The "content" (as far as the user is concerened) is the middle part which is where the photos are.
I'd assumed that the SEs picked up the alt tags and file names.
I personally agree that without any content, unless you have an amazing link building campaign it will be very difficult to optimise.
however if you are looking to come up under google images results then you will.
google have recently changed the search engine to give you all different results including google video's, images and maps, but I wouldnt solely rely on that as yet.
If you had the same artist on the whole page or 1 image a page then you could do by doing two things:
1. page titles: rolf harris portrait 2007
2. the way you link ie: (url)/rolf_harris_portrait_2007
Hope this helps
It would definately help, you need really around 300 words. However, I'm now thinking that a small bit of additional text would help.
I`ve lost count of the number of people i`ve helped over the years from my previous Team Macromedia time, who've built entire sites in fireworks of photoshop with the text as images, and then wondered why only one page of their site has been indexed and was right at the bottom of the rankings.
Although you can get some results from Google Images, its nowhere near the level of traffic you`d get from the Google search results.
When it comes down to it, theres always a way to add some text, even if its just describing the pictures. Unfortunately, although the search engines are getting more intelligent, and you're supposed to design sites for humans rather than spiders, you still need to give them a helping hand if you want anything near a half decent ranking.
I have spent the last year helping a struggling webmaster get his images only sites up in the rankings - PMing you the url so that you can see the SEO method and use of css.
One of the google flaws is that google ranks empty pages really well, if you know how to push unique relevance. You can kill yourself off if you have a lot of menu content.
Okay guys, at the risk of embarrassing myself for being a poor web designer, I'm adding a link to this thread to give an example of what I mean.
I'd be grateful for your views pls.

Warning - there are some images on this site of scantily clad women - it's all very tasteful and certainly not explicit but anyone who may be offended should perhaps only click on the above link (which is of anastacia) and not on any other links on the site.
Had a (long) look at the site, and from what I see you are in ideal situation to add some text to improve SEO.
Underneath the pictures, just add a bio of the particular woman, a couple of paragraphs with their name in there a couple of times, and this should improve your SEO without spoiling things for human visitors.
A couple of paragraphs per page, under the block of photos will do, rather than under each photograph.do you mean under 'each' photograph or just a paragraph under them all?
As well as helping your SEO, its also relevant as well, so won't be out of place for your human visitors.
