In a word, no.
I have read a few things recently about submitting sites to search engines as an effective SEO strategy. Sites such as this one
SEO is a flair not a science.
advocate "aggressive submission" to multiple search engines. How much success have people had with such a strategy and is it worth me taking the time do to it?
In a word, no.
I third it. I've always found the sites that I've submitted to less search engines do better than others I haven't...
1 of the things i recommend .. dont submit !
the engines like a site better when they find you !
a great example is add a link to your forum signature or post an advert on gumtree( its free )
then google & yahoo will come along & msn soon behind
also another trick is to "ping" your sit e.. yes i know its for blogs but how many times a day do you think googlebot visits technorati ?
exactly
an example is this westmidlandsfinance.co.uk - Google Search
i dont submit & although the cache needs to be updated .. it was added on th 13th sept![]()
Its not worth submitting nowadays. However, I do create a google sitemap which can also work with yahoo as well, to give them a helping hand.
Also creating a link on a high profile site such as gumtree or craigslist can dramatically speed up the time it takes for them to "find" your site. I can get sites indexed and in google within 24 hours doing this.
I've noticed you mentioning this before and was a bit dubious to be honest - I thought that if it's so easy why doesn't google just ignore it?
Anyway, curiosity got the better of me and I tried it on a new page. The page on Gumtree got indexed in about 2 hours and my new page that was only linked from my sitemap got indexed in 2 days!
So why is this allowed? I'm still a bit wary of trying again incase of repurcussions!![]()
no... all the major search engines will find you, with the correct link building. if your talking about the minor minor search engines that only have 1 spider and you'd never noramlly find that search engine anyway. then yer i spose you could submit to those ones. but generally i've found submitting to search egines a waste of time.

I would say YES as Google is not the only search engine you want to submit to, right? If you want more exposure and listings, then you shouldn't leave out smaller SEs. In essence, if you have a listing at other engines, Google bots will find you there and index your site as well. Some smaller SE's will add your site only if you submit your site to their directory or URL submit form.
links on gumtree
All these big links do is help you get indexxed....ranking is a different game
Doug
once your page is indexed from a link on a high profile site it will stay on google.. how you rank will depend on all teh obvious things.. content , relevancy , links etc etc
all gumtree will do is help you get indexed faster
aslo fizzbird if that "so called seo experts" comment was aimed at me .. all of my clienst are not complaining .. tons of top 5 ranks .. some for extremely competitive terms.. across all sectors.. and im not talking niche keywords that noone will search for .. im talking about major search terms
if it wasnt aimed at me then ignore my rant![]()
As Cygates said it doesn't matter, when you're in the index your in. Theres nothing dodgy about it at all, its all perfectly above board and there are no repercussions. And also what happens when your gumtree add pushes your actual page off the index
Basically, how it works is that Gumtree and Craigslist are both massive sites on the net, with a high pagerank and trust index. They have a fast turn around, with thousands of new pages added every day, and again thousands of page dropping every day as ad's expire. Because of this, Google spiders the sites much faster than it does a smaller website, in order to keep up with all the content and expired pages.
As a result if you add your link to either one, Google will pick up on it much faster than it would do from other sites that aren't spidered as often.
To Google this is absolutely fine, its perfectly legit and won't get you penalised. Craigslist and Gumtree don't like it much though, so you have to try and get your advert as similar as possible to another ad. Also, don't submit to more than one part of the site at once, eg to multiple towns or counties. You don't need to, Google will pick you up anyway, and if you do you`ll get banned from the sites (and their testing to see if your banned is quite good, so it can be hard to get another ad posted - know this through experience)![]()
Doing this isn't giving your site any special treatment, it won't make your position higher in google, its purely to get google to find you faster.
Once your page is dropped, you will still be in googles index, so nothing happens, your not removed.
On top of that, if you write your advert well you can actually pick up a lot of traffic and sales from Gumtree itself! One of my most profitable couple of days came from posting an add on Gumtree. I posted just to get indexed, but I actually got a huge ramp in sales from the ad, from Gumtree users rather than Google.
As a result, try and write good copy for the ad, don't just shove up a sentence and a link.
