Working on a small project at the moment which contains 5 urls, for example sonyhdtv.com, panasonichdtv.com, lghdtv.com, goodmanshdtv.com (you get the picture)

Now for time and effort these sites will share a common template with a couple of colours and images chanegd. What would be best in terms of these sites linking to each other? It might be beneficial for those viewing the Sony site to also view the Panasonic site.

Would every site linking to each and every other site be somehow penalised by the search engines? Or would I be better off using some kind of robin robin linking (Sony links to Panasonic, which links to LG, which links back to Sony).

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Cheers

Regarless of how you inter-link them, if they are on the same IP address and have the same WHOIS details then it is pretty certain that Google will see them as you linking to your own sites.

As long as each site is deemed a site worth indexing and as long as the content from one is relevant to the other you should not get any sort of penalty. You will also probably get no benefit - at least not until Google thinks the sites are of real value.

No use to your query but I like your movie location site - nice to see something original -I'm sure it will do well.

Are you going to use those domains like sony, panasonic, etc? If you can work your way at inter-linking them without getting penalized by SEs, then that would be fine - but you should be more wary on being sued by those companies should they decide to do so for using their copyrighted brands in your domain

Quality content and different IP blocks. Also consider the country where you're servers are based. For example 1and1.co.uk hosts theirs in Germany, Fasthosts in the UK so whilst they'd be different IP addresses, they'd also be in different countries.

Also, don't link all sites to every other site. Google will easily spot this pattern.

Exactly correct....we dont believe that being in germany, but with .co.uk domain amkes much difference. But if a choice always host in the UK...until you run out of datacentres of course.

But being in Germany with a .com for a UK site could well make a difference

You're absolutely right that there are other factors to consider, especially if you're looking to send traffic to UK affiliates.
