Link building is the key for an effective SEO campaign. This works best for PR and SERP. Always provide useful and relevant content in your websites niche as this will help in quality organic linking - sites will naturally linkj to your site once they see unique and helpful information in your site. Keep in mind that the more targeted backlinks you build for your site, the more likely it will bring in the right visitors that could make the conversions for better revenue. You do targeted link buidling for fast and long term traffic to your sites.

There are several ways to build links. Here are just some of the following:

    Directory Submissions
    Blog and Forum Postings
    Social Bookmarking
    Classified Ads
    Article Marketing
    Link Exchange (with relevant sites)
    Link Baits
    Etc. etc.

What are your thoughts? What kind of link building method do you use and how effective has it been?

I have come to know in a forum that Google considers a link as a back link if the link comes from a page, which has a PR. Therefore not all blogs can give you a back link. For example writing blogs for blogger and word press cannot give you a back link.

Don't know what forum you picked that up in, but if I was you I'd avoid it. Utter nonsense.

A link you have on another site is still considered a backlink even if the site has 0 PR.

    Nice advice DioBach, lols

Just because a page has PR0 today, does not mean it has PR0 tomorrow. It could become PR4.

What you do need to watch out for are pages without any PR - these are grayed out in the Google toolbar - and indicates the page has some penalty. It could also be a new page which has not yet been crawled, so check whether or not the page is cached.

What you're already doing by providing relevant and original content is what Matt Cutts would describe as the perfect sort of link bait. That's great, but many use link bait in a more aggressive means, anything from attacking another site or company to providing viral content that potentially would get linked to from all sorts of other sites. This could potentially be dangerous as if you're successful, you could get a load of back links from irrelevant or bad sites.

If I'm not mistaken Link bait is a blog post or an article submission that is cool or quirky or viral that people will naturally want to link to, thus, 'baiting' people to link back to you as a result of a controversial or viral post, eg: learnhowtodj.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/iphone-dj/ (not going to back link it so you'll have to copy/paste it)

The classics are things like "Top Ten list of ...." or "Microsoft suxor! / Apple is l33t!" type articles - they don't add to the sum of human knowledge, but people can't help but talk about them, and online that means links

Maybe he was referring to a recent blog post on here that picked up on the rel="nofollow" tag that some blogs now force into links. This apparently stops search engines from following them.

I have no idea, im just repeating what this article said lol!

Anyway, the conclusion was, check carefully before spamming in blogs/forums because you may actually be wasting your time !

Times have changed and reciprocal linking is not as effective as it use to be. A more effective link is one that is non reciprocal. These are far more difficult to get but they will help your ranking.

I use 3Way-Links | 250 Non Reciprocal Backlinks which allows me to get about 250 non reciprocal backlinks to my site for selected keywords. Its a paid service but if your keywords are not too competitive you can rank quite highly in Google and the other searchengines.

I've got a couple of questions for the original poster.. I agree that being in directories and having back-links are important, but having just started up my own (personal) website,I'm having a bit of trouble. What other directories are there other than DMOZ (which seems to be a bit rubbish - I submitted my site 6 months ago and its been ignored) - I think DMOZ is a whole separate thread in itself! Can't think of any other directories? And I'm hoping my site will be good enough for people to see it's worth and link to it. However, all the pages with good PR are "competitors" and I would assume this would be the same case in any industry. I'm not sure hoping for people to link works.. and like I say, none of your "competitors" are going to link to you?

    Anyway, just some thoughts...
