Hi, have done a quick search, but couldn't find what i'm looking for, but i'm sure its been written about already - how important from an seo perspective is the length of your url structure?
On the one hand, having some of your keywords in the structure should help, but on the other, i'm sure i've read that if there is to many layers, the search engines may be confused or not dig down to the bottom level.

Has anyone got any info or resources about this?

    Cheers,

    Alf

Having keywords in your url's can definately help from an SEO perspective, as well as the fact the keywords are highlighted in the urls in the search results so it draws peoples eyes to them.

In theory, you should never need to go more than 3 levels deep eg

    mysite. com/category/sub-category/product-page.htm

This should be absolutely fine for all the search engines.

Agreed! Having your keywords in the URL is a BIG plus factor for SEO.

But you really shouldn't stop there. For it to improve and maintain a good position in the SERps, you would still need to do proper optimization.

With the improved crawling abilities now available, depth of your site isn't as important as it was. The ease with which a spider can trace a path from the home page to a deep page AND BACK AGAIN is more relevant now. Thats not to say you can layer up sites with keyword stuffing only directory layers, and expect it all to work brilliantly - but it you need to go to 4 or 5 layers, say, don't worry about it

Thanks Brendon - good advice!!! We have managed to make the site navgate efficiently with three layers, but nice to know this anyway!!
