I set up my affiliate site about 3 weeks ago and I'm now getting returned on google's first results page (which I'm dead chuffed about!) for one of my keyphrases. Around 40% of my referrals are from google. However that keyphrase is not the principal one I was targeting when optimising the site content!

My question is, is it relatively normal to do quite well on one keyphrase and terribly on another? Should I be glad I'm doing well with one of my phrases and focus my attention on that? Or am I focusing too much on metadata anyway and should I just keep adding relevant content to the site? Also, if I change my keywords now will it affect my results next time googles indexes?

Yes, it's very normal to do well on one keyphrase but not another. I would just keep adding content to the site as you may then be surprised what is getting searched for. I'm not sure what site structure you are using but I normally use one page per keyphrase I am looking to target.

Its all down to your site content and how competitive the keywords are.

If your main keyphrase that you've optimised for is very competitive, but another keyphrase has a lot less competition then you are likely to rank higher for the less competitive keyword.

You often find that you get hits for keyphrases which aren't actually on your page. The reason this happens is that google picks words from different sentences and combines them into phrases which it then matches with search results, the words don't have to be next to each other. Sometimes this produces some quite odd results!
