What everyones opinion on this then?

I know you should optimise your title tags to 66 characters long due to the display restrictions in google, however does google still use words/ phrases after that to discern the serps position?

I have noticed that if you search for certain things and one of the queries is after the 66th character - the .... after the listing is bolded as if to say that google knows a keyword is later on in the title.

If this is the case - what do you think the 'actual' limit to a title tag is?

Yes, but as the title gets longer, the dilution of any individual word gets greater, so it's impact reduces

I've seen up to 5Mb indexed for a single page (although, clearly, that's rare). No hard limit per se (that you can reasonably reach, anyway), just remember that longer != better

Sorry, wasn't clear. 5Mb was the size of the whole page, rather than the title on it's own.

Due to how various HTML entities are analysed, there's no theoretical limit, other than how much data per page is indexed, on how much title can be "seen", but of course as the title gets bigger, it gets less useful. SImilarly, just marking your whole page as <h1> doesn't make it all more relevant...
