Are site-wide blogroll style links worth anything these days? I know single, in-article, links are good but wanted to see what the latest thinking was for site-wide links is. In fact, could they do any harm and should therefore be removed?

It depends (which isn't terribly helpful, I know). Sounds like you've got a handle on why though

From my experience they work in getting a page looked at, however because they are site wide and the same on all pages the anchor text carries next to no weight.

It does help for traffic reasons. For SEO, minimal value. It may also appear as an advertisement if it would appear on every single page in the eyes of the SE's - in which case, it may do more harm than good.

I'd disagree with that, they certainly do carry weight but like most links the site linking to you will determine the weight that any particular link might carry.

The key is to vary your links.

OK, Please excuse my total ignorance, but what are classed as site wide links?

IIRC, you get full value for one (1) link, and the rest are marked waaaaay down. Millions of them can have an additional effect though

Are you talking about having the same links on every page, or about having different links on every page?

If it looks unnatural then you will get no benefit and possibly be black-flagged (in my experience :|)

Depends whether the site is 8 pages, 80 pages or 8000 pages.

I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

All the sites in your signature have 'site wide' links

Do you know what a 'site wide' link is?

BTW: I don't know what 'black-flagging' entails but it sounds painful?

As with any link exchange, site wide or not it all depends on how google views the page/site the link is on.

If it is from the homepage or site that ranks well for the keywords you are trying to target I would say grab it with both hands

I wouldnt really look too much into site wide or not...its the quality of the webpage (in the eyes of google) which should be your deciding factor.

I'd say it depends on the quality of the site giving them. I've got some decent blogs that I occasionally use to get other smaller projects indexed and it definitely works.

It's almost impossible to test these things in isolation but I've had at least one instance where I've done nothing else and managed to get a site indexed and selling within a couple of days.
